SMC1 is a member of the structural maintenance of chromosomes family. It was originally identified in Saccharomyces sereviciae as a component of cohesin, a protein complex that is required for maintenance of sister chromatid cohesion. SMC1 was also reported to be present in a biochemically defined mammalian protein complex, called RC-1, which promotes DNA recombination. The protein was recently shown to be a target of the ATM kinase with phosphorylation of Ser 957 and Ser 966 of SMC1 occurring in an ATM-dependent manner after ionizing irradiation. The protein thus participates in cellular responses to DNA damage. Human SMC1 gene is localized on chromosomal region Xp11.22-p11.21.

Storage and Stability:
May be stored at 4 degrees C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20 degrees C. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
