Living cells communicate information both within the cell itself, and to other cells using a variety of cell signaling pathways. These pathways involve interactions of protein molecules, specifically antibodies and enzymes, created from specific genes in the cell’s DNA.


By studying antibodies and enzymes and their role in cell regulation, signaling and transduction, researchers can determine the molecular pathways leading to specific diseases, and attempt to alter those pathways. For example, by studying the antibody Interleukin 10 (IL-10), researchers have found that defects in IL-10 are a cause of susceptibility to Crohn disease.

Biological researchers use a variety of equipment to study cell signaling pathways, such as microscope-mounted mechanical stretch-strain cell instruments to simulate the bi-axial forces of stretching or compression on growing endothelial, muscle, and fibroblast cells.

Other cell signaling research equipment includes protein analysis tools, such as an instrument that automates all manual operations associated with Western blotting; a multiplex fluorescent detection and chemiluminescent imaging system; magnet assisted transfection (MATra) systems to transfect nucleic acids from plasmid DNA, siRNA or oligonucleotides; and microarray hybridization stations.

Accessories used in cell signaling research include qPCR primers; well tissue culture plates; microplate washers; microplate readers; and biological stirrers designed for optimal suspension cell culture and the use of microcarriers. Commercially available antibodies used in cell signaling research include insulin-like growth factors IGF1 and IGF2, CD3, CD4 (the primary cellular receptor for HIV), CD31, CD 20, CD 34, CD 68, and others.
