Cell culture media formulations have been developed over decades to support varying research goals, such as studies of cellular response to particular toxins, and production of large batches of biomass, including targeted recombinant proteins. Media include different combinations and amounts of growth factors (e.g., from animal sera) and nutritional support, such as salts, vitamins, amino acids, nitrogen, and glucose (for nutrition).

In addition to culture media, cell growth may also depend upon the type of surface on which cells are grown (plastic or different types of glass), and how that surface has been coated or electrically or chemically modified.

Recent efforts have been made to develop plant-based cell culture media to replace media based on materials derived from animals or bacteria, such as E. coli, bovine (casein), or porcine brain and heart tissue, which are known to contain trace amounts of contaminants, such as endotoxins, that adversely affect stem cell and other cell cultures.

Cell culture media are required that support and enhance growth of specific cell types and cell lines; for example mammary epithelial cells; human microvascular endothelial cells; human prostate cells; immortalized cancer cell lines; basal cells; fibroblast cells; L-cells; Drosophila cell lines; rainbow trout gill cell line; and yeast, E. coli, Salmonella, Pseudomonas, Bacillus and other microorganisms.

Tissue culture media must support living tissues, for example rabbit retinae, maintaining their metabolic and electrical responses as long as possible for the duration of a study. A non-nutritional salt-based medium can be used to maintain the viability of microorganisms for transport, without significant increase in growth.

Media kits are also available, which include pre-conditioners, additives and cell growth boosters designed for specific cell culture studies.
