Smad3 is a 50kD transcriptional modulator activated by TGF-beta and activin type 1 receptor kinase, functioning in cell proliferation, differentiation and development. Upon stimulation, Smad3 oligomerizes with Smad4 and translocates into the nucleus and binds to DNA and transcription factors.
Smad3 activity induces differentiation of selected neuronal subtypes at the expense of other subtypes.
