SLC5A9 is a 76kD member of the solute carrier family. It is a transmembrane protein, expressed in the small intestine, liver and kidney. SGLT4 functions as a low affinity, Na+ dependent, alpha-methyl-D-glucopyranoside (AMG) transporter. Mannose, glucose and fructose inhibit this transport activity. SGLT4 is also thought to be involved in the absorption and/or reabsorption of Mannose, glucose, 1,5-anhydro-D-glucitol and fructose.
