SV5 has been isolated from a range of species including human, canine, porcine and simian. There is evidence that it may infect a range of cell lines, including immortalised cells as well as primary monkey kidney cells. Infection of primary monkey kidney cells may lead to confusing results in viral diagnostic procedures that use these cells for viral isolation.
