Sonic hedgehog a (shha) is a member of the hedgehog gene family. The hedgehog family of genes specifies the fate of a large number of different cell types within invertebrate and vertebrate embryos. Genetic analyses of the zebrafish orthologue of mammalian scube-2 indicates its involvement in hedgehog (Hh) signaling. Duplication events have occurred evolutionarily in teleost fish with regard to sonic hedgehog and indian hedgehog. Formation of the adenohypophysis in zebrafish is largely dependent on shha, as in mice, demonstrating highly conserved function. Hedgehog is essential to adult hematopoietic stem cell formation in zebrafish.
