Thioglycollate Culture Medium is used for the cultivation of anaerobic, microaerophilic and aerobic microorganisms and for determining the presence of bacteria in normally sterile materials. Sulfhydryl compounds and low concentrations of agar, alone or in combination, are used to culture anaerobic organisms in a fluid broth under aerobic conditions. The use of sodium thioglycollate in these broth media is for the neutralization of mercurial preservatives. Sodium thioglycollate aIso lowers the oxidation-reduction potential of the media. Dextrose is added to enhance growth.
Storage and Stability: Store powdered media at RT. Opened bottles should be capped tightly and kept in a dark, low humidity environment. Prepared media should be kept refrigerated and used within a short period of time.
