CD117, also known as c-kit, is a 145kD gkycoprotein that belongs to subclass III within the family of growth factor receptors with tyrosine kinase activity. It is found on 1-4% of bone marrow cells, the majority of which (50-70%) also express CD34 and comprise pluripotent hematopoietic progenitor cells. CD117 is also expressed on mast cells and acute myeloid leukemia cells. The interaction of CD117 with its counter-receptor, c-kit ligand (also known as stem cell growth factor, steel factor and mast cell growth factor), is crucial for the development of hematopoietic, gonadal and pigment stem cells.1-4 Applications:
